BUCKHANNON, West Virginia – A Ripley High School senior is the newest recipient of a full tuition plus room and board scholarship to attend West Virginia Wesleyan College beginning in the fall of 2024.

Ronald E. Greer III “Trey,” son of Ronald and Amanda Greer has been named the 2023 West Virginia Scholar. At Ripley High School, Greer is  Student Body President and has served as Junior Class President, Viking Mascot, a varsity cheerleader and a member of cross country and track and field teams. Greer is a two-time state Future Business Leaders of America winner, a WV Boys State attendee and a Daughters of the American Revolution State Citizenship winner.

Greer is the youngest to receive the John and Amy McGinley Leadership Award from the City of Ripley and earned a tech degree in Front End Web Design from Tree House via the West Virginia Coding Club.

“I’m beyond excited to be attending WVWC,” Greer said. “Throughout the college visits I participated in, I was shown how much the student body means to the faculty. The small student to faculty ratio, the personable professors, and the overall atmosphere of the campus was exactly what I was looking for.

“The scholarship that I am receiving is of incredible importance to me. Above all, it’s been a reminder for me that all of the hard work and sacrifices I’ve made over the past four years has paid off and I couldn’t be more grateful for the financial stress to be off my shoulders.”

The Culpepper Wesleyan Scholars Award, supported by Marvin Culpepper ’51, and Hon. ’06 and Elaine Karnes Culpepper ’54, Hon. ’06, provides a portion of the funding for the West Virginia Scholar Program each year.  In addition to WVWC and West Virginia MetroNews, the West Virginia Scholar Program was sponsored by Greer Industries, West Virginia Hospital Association, ZMM Architects and Engineers, Friends of Coal and the West Virginia Farm Bureau.

The 2024 WV Scholar Program is under way now and the winner will be announced in June 2024.
