Good evening, this is Will Hosaflook, Superintendent of Jackson County Schools. I'm excited to welcome you on Tuesday, August 19th, to a new school year filled with promise and anticipation.
It's important to take a moment to celebrate our recent accomplishments. Jackson County Schools continue to be a leader in academics across the state. Last year, our fifth-grade students—now sixth graders—ranked number one in West Virginia for English and Math on the General Summative Assessment. Fairplain Elementary is now a top 10 elementary school in the state, and seven of our eleven schools achieved their highest academic marks ever in English or Math. This is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the hard work of our students, staff, and community.
We are truly blessed to have such dedicated employees, supportive communities, and remarkable students. I firmly believe in the power of public education to provide hope and more opportunities for our students than any other form of schooling. We accept the high standards we're held to every day, knowing that our commitment to accountability sets us apart from other options. Thank you, parents, school employees, and community members, for making Jackson County a great place to learn and grow.
This year, your child's opening day packet will include a letter explaining new legislative laws as well as hard-copy forms you need to return to school. Digital forms are available on our website. As always, I appreciate your patience on the first day of school as we work to make everything run smoothly. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we begin another exciting year. Have a wonderful evening.

Dear Jackson County Families,
We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and staff. With that commitment in mind, we want to make you aware of an incident that occurred today at Ravenswood Middle School.
Earlier today, a student reported to PRO Bobby Knox that another student had commented about having a weapon in his locker. Within three minutes of receiving this information, PRO Knox and school administration acted swiftly and located an unloaded .22 caliber revolver inside a backpack stored in the student's locker. No ammunition was found, and the weapon was immediately secured without incident.
We are incredibly grateful to the student who came forward and to PRO Knox for his quick and professional response. At no point was there a direct threat to students or staff, and the situation was brought under control promptly and safely.
The School district is cooperating fully with local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation, and appropriate disciplinary actions will follow according to district policy and state law.
We encourage you to take this opportunity to speak with your children about the importance of reporting concerns to a trusted adult - See Something - Say Something. The safety of our schools is our top priority. This communication also reminds all families to properly store weapons in a locked, secure area in your home.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your child's school administration. Thank you for your continued support.

Good evening,
In our ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and security of our schools, the Shield Coordinator—alongside local law enforcement—will be testing a weapons detection system at our secondary schools over the next few days.
As part of this testing, students may be asked to walk through the detection system before entering the building. Please note that this system is mobile and may also be utilized at various events across the county to further support and improve our existing safety practices.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to prioritize the well-being of our students and staff.
Thank you and have a wonderful evening.
